About Picture His Word
Painting and drawing from observation, I share stories through meditative landscapes and familial portraits. Thin applications of paint allow the lines of ink and graphite to peek through the surface. Stages of learning about horizons and learning about people stand side by side.
Another area of interest is the ancient Jewish tradition of micrography/microcalligraphy: using letters to form representational designs. Usually drawn from memory, I contemplate the relationship between the word made flesh and the flesh that was marred beyond human likeness.
Describing the works individually is much easier that making broad statements about the portfolio. I prefer to talk about the weather of that day: “It was typical Chicago weather in July, hot and bright. The sun on my head made colors thicker and even the sky looked like a dip I could eat with a cracker.” Or I could tell you about the sitter: “They sat patiently side by side, holding hands and smiling with each glance up from the painting. It's the little things, I told myself, the little things that make a marriage.”
So take a look. Listen to the story each painting holds.
